More than two decades ago, when Gandalf's name meant nothing to the world (except to a few enlightened ones), when the word "magician" did not conjure up in people anything other than the image of a lord taking pigeons out of his sleeves, Daína Chaviano promoted Tolkien's work in Cuba. For the hundreds of readers who asked for it through her blog and her Facebook page, the author agreed to share the text of her prologue, which appeared in the first Cuban edition of The Hobbit, by J.R.R.
