Barranquilla International Book Fair

Daína Chaviano was at the Barranquilla International Book Fair (Colombia), whose main subject this year, "Roots," was aimed to explore what identifies us, what makes us who we are, both from a cultural point of view and from what is essential to every human being.

The author was accompanied by editor Jael Stella Gomez, from Norma Publishing House, that published the first Colombian edition of her short story book Amoroso planeta, which is part of the ninth-grade syllabus in that country. Chaviano has held many virtual meetings with students from various Colombian schools, with whom she shared her personal and literary experiences, giving talks and answering questions from teachers and students.

Chaviano, who also has received three literary awards for her most recent novel Los hijos de la Diosa Huracán (Gold Medal for Best Book in Spanish, Florida Book Awards, Best Popular Fiction and Best Novel - Adventure or Drama in Spanish, International Latino Book Awards), has devoted most of her works to the defense of cultural diversity and the search for our ethnic-cultural roots.

For addressing these issues, she received the Malinalli National Prize for the Promotion of the Arts, Human Rights and Cultural Diversity, awarded by the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (Mexico), in 2014.
